HEADLINES -
Cup specialists Unique FC back on the giant killing trail again as they knock out higher opposition in a cracker at Meadowcroft.  Cheddington Reserves from Div Two stun Premier Division Athletico Aylesbury with an 8-1 win.  Other big winners today were Haydon Hill, VTS, Winslow Town and Bell Topboys stick 20 past Grenson.  Extra time wins for Excel Dents and The Cricketers, but it's heartbreak for Elm Farm.

The Management Committee decided it was time for a change in this seasons Vale of Aylesbury Sunday Challenge Cup.

For so long, this competition was seen as the best in the region with only the top clubs from certain leagues being invited to take part.  Logistical problems with inviting teams from outside means that this season, no teams from neighbouring leagues are taking part and the format has changed whereby all of our 30 teams go into an 'FA Cup' style competition with a draw being made for each round.

The draw for round one took place at the clubs meeting on the 9th of August and it produced some intriguing ties.

Elm Farm FC are one of our new sides this season and they must have thought their luck was out when they were drawn away to the mighty Aston Clinton S&SC.  The new boys got off too a great winning start in their league campaign last week and with John Roberts' men having off the field problems with their ground, it was now a more interesting cup tie.  In the end, the former champions ran out narrow 2-1 winners and you will be able to read more about this on the Elm Farm FC website here.

Bell Topboys FC had a great start to life in the Combination last week as they put 8 past AFC Belgrave.  They went a step further today by beating Grenson 20-0.  You can read more on The Topboys website here.

Bell Topboys FC players pay their respects to Anthony Williams before today's cup game with Grenson at Meadowcroft.

Athletico Aylesbury of the Premier Division have had their problems of late and they would not have been relishing a trip to Div Two newcomers Cheddington Reserves.  They were never in this tie from the first whistle and came away with an 8-1 beating.  Winslow Town are buzzing at the moment despite being dealt the devastating blow of not being able to play in their home town after The Winslow Centre was deemed unfit yet again.  This doesn't seem to be having an affect on the players though as they followed up their 6-0 league winning opening league game last week with an 11-1 win over Thame Athletic who were playing their first ever game today.  More news on this on the Winslow Town FC website here.

The name of Div One Unique FC was put firmly on the footballing map a couple of seasons ago as they unexpectedly won The Chris Payne Trophy beating FC Aristocrat in the final.  After a troubled time of late, things look to be getting back on track for Graham Philbey's men as they overcame Rockwood FC of the Prem after a dramatic penalty shoot out at Meadowcroft and here is some action from this amazing cup tie:

Dave Hayles-Johnston (15) gives Unique FC the lead midway through the first half.

Unique FC skipper Gary Symons.

Lee Haynes (out of shot) levels for Rockwood before half time.

Spot the ball!

1-1 after 90 minutes then and it's not over yet.
Nobody told the groundsman that it was extra time as he started to take the nets down...

...come back a bit later mate!

Rob Short (10) sees this effort ruled out for offside in extra time.

Referee Bob Walter.

The Premier Division side looked on top before the introduction of Unique's star substitute Tom Brindley (10).
Graham Philbey's inch perfect 50 yard pass was neatly put away by the sub to make it 2-1 in the first period of extra time.

Tempers boiled over as the game drew too a close as Unique's Alec Bell and Rockwood's Rob Short square up.

And the sight of a yellow card from referee Walter brings smile to Alec Bell's face!

Rob Short's header looks like it's in, but it sailed over the bar as time looked to be running out for his side...

...but Rockwood's Lee Haynes (far left in the red) sees his sweet strike make it 2-2 with just one minute left on the clock.

Into the penalty shoot out then and the first four penalties from each side were scored.
Up steps Rockwood's Chris Green...

...and it's brilliantly saved by keeper Matt Milton.

So it comes down to Marc Thoday.
If he scores, his side are through...

...It's there!!

Unique FC players rush to congratulate Marc Thoday after his penalty wins it.
Congratulations go to both sides for an excellent cup tie, but it's Unique FC who go into the hat for the draw for round two.

Last seasons runners up and current Premier Division champions VTS FC have got off too a flying start this season and they followed up last weeks 10-1 league victory with an 11-0 win over Padbury AFC at Springfields.  Chris Payne Trophy holders AFC Belgrave took a beating in their opening league game last week, but thing seem to be back on track as they knocked out old enemies Bucks (Aylesbury) 3-1 at Westcott Sports & Leisure Centre.  Haydon Hill bounced back from a heavy league defeat last week with big 10-2 win over Walton Street Rangers and Nags Head continued their impressive start to the season by beating higher opposition.  They eventually saw off Terry Medd's Stone FC 5-4 in what looked like an exciting game.  Aylesbury Exiles tasted cup action for the first time and lost out 3-2 to Excel Dents after extra time - more on the Excel Dents website here and Division Two Chearsley Cricketers also needed the extra 30 minutes as they caused an upset by beating Premier Division outfit Chandos Arms, 5-4 the final score at Weston Turville.

The rest of the ties were pretty close as the all Prem clash between Ickford and FC Aristocrat kicked off at 1pm at the Rec in Ickford and it was the visitors who booked their place in round two with 4-2 win.  At the same venue, Ickford Reserves and Yeoman FC kicked off at 1030am and the visitors were also successful as well as they came away 4-3 winners.  The closest game of the day saw Padbury Utd Res squeeze past FC Wanderers 2-1.

The draw for the next round looks like taking place at the next Management Committee Meeting on the 4th October.
