How it all works:

Each club is marked out of 10 for their sportsmanship for each game from the time the match referee arrives until they leave the ground. From the mark given to a club, there are deductions that occur when a club receives cautions, dismissals or both.

The example below is worked out if the mark given by the match referee is 9

CLUB RECEIVE 1 CAUTION IN THE MATCH, -3 GIVING A TOTAL SPORTSMANSHIP MARK OF 6.

CLUB RECEIVES 2 CAUTIONS IN THE SAME MATCH, -8 GIVING A TOTAL MARK OF 1.

CLUB RECEIVES 3 CAUTIONS IN THE SAME MATCH, -18 GIVING A TOTAL MARK OF -9

CLUB RECEIVES 4 CAUTIONS IN THE SAME MATCH, -28 GIVING A TOTAL MARK OF -19 AND SO ON.

As you can see, if a club has a bad game, then it takes time to recover especially when we expect every club to achieve at least an overall total of 3 or more. There is a financial incentive for the club winning the Sportsmanship Award and this scheme was also introduced to stop clubs continually misbehaving to spoil the enjoyment of others.
